LEADERSHIP AND TEAM BUILDING

As the Director, it's my job to lead my staff and help them produce quality stories containing important information. But, prior to them producing good stories, I have to learn the strengths and weaknesses of each staff member, so I can properly help them in whatever they lack. Having that one-on-one connection with my staff creates mutual trust and respect- much needed qualities in any newsroom.

TRELLO

This year, we had a incredibly large group of students sign up for the Broadcast class. For this reason, we had to split up the classes into two different blocks resulting in lack of communication. Our advisor brought up the idea of Trello to use as a communicating platform between the advanced and intro class. The advanced class tried it out the first week of school and we have used it ever since.

The screenshot above shows our Trello board. Boards include our next show, story ideas, staff positions, students in the intro class, and our equipment log from the first day of school. This platform is continuously helping me keep track of our shows content and assists me in communicating with the intro class. The installation of Trello to the broadcast curriculum has benefitted the class and helped me improve my leadership skills in the newsroom.

NSPA BEST OF SHOW

In April 2016, at the Los Angeles Convention, our 2015 Halloween Show won a Best of Show award. We finished seventh among the entries. Being a top-tier program, we are recognized by judges and instructors nationwide, and that's pretty cool.

PACEMAKER

In November 2016, at the Indianapolis Convention, our 2015 Halloween Show won a Pacemaker. Last year's seniors were the masterminds behind the award-winning content and I continually strive to produce shows worthy of national awards. Prior to the end of the year, the seniors got together and passed down information that would help me be the best Director I can be. I take the skills they taught me and build our news team so we can produce the best show for our school and community.

ETHICAL ISSUES

As the Director, I am in charge of ethical and moral decisions of the show. I encourage creativity and humor, but sometimes I have to cut pieces because of potential repercussions that could come after a particular piece was aired. For example, a staff member wanted to make a funny yet informative piece about gun safety. However, he failed to fully plan out the story leaving out very important information. Since this incident, he has more throughly planned out and executed an instructive gun safety piece.
